The hike to Cathedral Lake is a local favorite and is a definite must-do while visiting Aspen during the summer or fall. This pristine alpine lake with Cathedral Peak as its backdrop is the prefect place to relax if you really want to get away. The trailhead is located about a mile off of Castle Creek road just past the old ghost town of Ashcroft. The trail begins at 9,500 ft and steadily climbs through the shade of a mature aspen grove with fantastic views of Pearl Pass and the Elk Mountain Range. Eventually the trail will meet up alongside Pine Creek. The trail will steepen and traverse through some scree fields before reaching a series of steep switchbacks. Follow the marked trail towards Cathedral Lake, 11,866 ft. The trail is approximately 6.4 miles roundtrip and is classified as moderate – difficult.
