Before there was skiing on Aspen Mountain here in our lovely Colorado mountain town, there was silver mining. In the late 1870s, prospectors began venturing into the Aspen area looking for silver. While there were many locations for mining around the Roaring Fork Valley, including the ghost town of Ashcroft, there is one mine that remains in operation even today. The Smuggler Mine, located right in Aspen, Colorado, is the oldest operating silver mine in Aspen mining district. It is also one of the few that started back in the early silver boom years of the town’s history.
Back in its heyday, the Smuggler Mine contributed to nearly one-fifth of the world’s total silver production. The largest silver nugget ever mined was found right here in the Smuggler Mine. Hardly able to be called a “nugget” this treasure weighed in at over 1900 pounds!
Today, one of the most popular activities is to hike or bike 1.4 miles up Smuggler Mountain Road to the viewing platform looking over Aspen. While so many people have walked past the mine, not many have been inside. If you’re looking for something a little bit different, take a tour of the Smuggler Mine. Learn all about Aspen’s unique mining history, including how there are tunnels reaching 1,000 feet below the mine entrance that weave throughout town. The Gant’s concierge can help with tour information. Contact us to find out more!
